Mr. Lovvorn was a retired farmers [sic] and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, where h e had been a deacon for the past 39 years. Mr. Lovvorn was the son of John Newton Uvvom [sic ] and Mary Knowles Lovvom of Randolph Co. fie [sic] was the grandson of James M. and Bathsheb a Traylor Uvvom [sic], who were the first Lovvom settlers in Randolph Co., having come into t he county in 1837 with their father-in-law, NEdgeman [sic] Traylor from Henry Co. Ga. Gaine s W. Lovvorn is the great-great-grandson of Revolutionary War soldier, Thomas Lovvorn, who li ved in Pittsyvania Co. Va., Surry and Stokes counties in North Carolina, Oglethorpe and Clark e Counties in Ga., and died in 1829 in St. Clair County, Alabama. This is the Jim Lovvorn that originally did all the research on the Scogin lineage. "Uncle Ji m" as Adena and I knew him, was obsessed with the family genealogy and spent countless hour s researching and talking to people. When he would vacation or travel, he would always stop a nd go to the court houses and telephone books to look up any Scogins or Lovvorns that might b e in that area; and then visit them and collect data. Jim entered all his data into a computer database using a software program named "ROOTS III" . Much of Jim's data is still locked up in Jim's software today. I am afraid it may never b e recovered due to the onward march of software systems and the inability of his family to ac cess his work due to an unknown password. Jim wrote this in a premliminary document in 198 9 - later to become his book: "It is my intention after this 1989 Scogin Reunion to turn to research and compilation of ear lier Scogin, Scoggin, Scoggins, Schoggen, and Scogan families. In the old Orange county of N C in the period of 1760-1800, We find names such as John, William, Nicholas, Richard, Francis , Nathan, Benjimin, Jonah, Honas, Willis, Joseph and Smith and our own Alexander commonly cal led Ellick. I want to establish the relationship of these Scogins. They came from Virginia ju st across the border." This he wrote in 1989. He started this document with, "This is a BRIEF [emphasis mine] listin g of SOME [emp. mine] of the descendants and the footnotes entered thus far in my coputer dat abase. It is offered as a preliminary document, as a sort of progress report." Jim Lovvorn died in 1992 and never saw the publication of his work. The preliminary documen t that he released that I mentioned above was used to publish the book we know now as, "The D escendants of Alexander Scogin (1750 - 1810) and Allied Lines" by James Lecil Lovvorn. [published 1994 by Tennesse Valley Publishing, P.O. Box 52527, Knoxville, TN 37950 - Librar y of Congress Cat. Card #94-60799] Accordingly, I believe there is much, and knowing Jim, possibly an unbelievable amount, of re searched data of these families that have not, nor may ever, been released. In the published volume of Jim's work. Adena Lovvorn's "Aunt Betty" (who got the book publish ed after Jim's death) wrote, signing his and her names, the following: "Dena, To that 3rd daughter, who is and was a great part of our love and life. James Lecil Lovvorn Elizabeth B. Lovvorn" Mitch Sanders Nov. 11, 2001 Resided at 118 Caldwell Dr., Oak Ridge, TN Graduated from Auburn University, Dec 17, 1949 in BEE Communication Option. Occupation: Electrical Engineer ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ For James Lecil "Jim" Lovvorn's paternal side of family: The Loving Family in America book quotes on page 290 - " (James Lecil Lovvorn has been most helpful in this effort to sort out the LOVING and the LO VVORN descendants, for he has worked for 20 years or more on the Lovvorn ancestry and has pla ns to do a book on this branch of the Loving family. His book will be a much more complete c overage of the Lovvorns than this book provides.)" -------------------------------------------------------- [note from Mitch Sanders - ] Jim Lovvorn died before he was able to write any books. A Scogin book was published post-humo usly by his surviving wife. Jim's vast research is still to date, locked up in a ROOTS3 (?) p rogram locked without password on his computer along with his wealth of 20 plus years of coll ecting data, films reels, photos and traveling the country, and constantly looking up relativ es. It may not be known by people who did not meet Jim, but Jim fought cancer all his life an d persistant problems with a deformed leg that he was born with. It was amputated by the tim e I met him as my wife's uncle in the late 1970's. Jim perservered diligently with his resear ch and would swim and travel to try and stay in shape. Jim had a large, courageous heart an d was a mild, quiet, very gentlemanly and mannered man. He was not shy though about his amput ated leg in public and he never let it interfere with his efforts in life. He was a highly in telligent man with a passion for his family. All Lovvorns owe him a great deal and can take h eart in life from his diligent example. Thank you Jim. Mitch The pictures you printed out and sent were great. Thank you. They were fading rapidly when ex posed to light and now I think they are preserved for the foreseeable future any way. Regarding Jim's genealogy work, Betty regards it as something to be guarded, yet she wanted t o give it to a library of her choosing, but they do not accept any vertical files. He had sev eral of those and many loose leaf notebooks of completed forms of his own design. Also ther e are tapes and slides which are priceless. I discussed your getting access to these and th e idea that some of the information might eventually be found on the internet was mentioned , and I don't remember who brought it up, but I don't think it was meant to be offensive in a ny respect. I would like very much to see Jim's work completed and published, but I have neither the ener gy or the expertise to do it. I think the expense could by handled by some careful planning a nd marketing the finished product. We would need a more complete product than now exists. Ji m gave me a copy of all he had on his computer and I have printed it out. Also have the origi nal copies on five and one half inch floppys. I copied it to a smaller floppy disk, the progr am is roots3 and Jim had all the directions for using it. I've been unable to open it He gav e me this and said it was only about 20% of what he had so ther remains a graet deal of wor k to be done on it. Several people have contacted me since Jim's death wanting info and I refer them to Betty. Th e last person to contact me said she wouldn't bother her again.
